Sealing Singapore’s First Maritime Sector Green Loan

In Nov 2020, PSA Marine has been granted a sustainability-linked loan from DBS Bank. The three-year EUR 30 million equivalent loan features an interest rate adjustment linked to an ESG (environmental, social and governance) target, which requires PSA Marine’s Crew Transfer Vessels to be substantially deployed to support offshore wind energy-related activities, such as the transportation and accommodation of personnel, cargoes and equipment for offshore windfarms. This is PSA Marine’s first sustainability-linked loan and the first of its kind granted to a company in Singapore’s maritime industry. The investment made in support of offshore wind market through the loan reaffirms PSA Marine’s commitment to support a cleaner and greener future. PSA Marine will continue to partner with financial institutions and like-minded organisations to explore new opportunities in this space.

Being one of the key renewable energies, wind currently meets 16% of Europe’s electricity demand. In support of the wind industry, PSA Marine provides a fleet of crew transfer vessels (CTVs) and service accommodation transfer vessel (SATV), built to the highest technical specifications, providing safe and efficient 24/7 services to assist in the construction, operation and maintenance of offshore windfarms in Europe and Taiwan. The CTVs are operated under the ISM code and certified to DNV GL classification standards. Our services contribute towards the generation of sustainable energy source for the future.

The Fleet D2K (Data-To-Knowledge) Centre is the latest PSA Marine initiative in leveraging data and technology to digitalise and decarbonise our Singapore fleet.

With the use of IoT, cloud and other digital technologies, we can now observe and monitor our vessel fleet anytime and anywhere whilst at the same time, leverage video technology to detect anomalies and predict behaviours.

By combining multiple streams of data such as geo-location, vessel movement, machinery health and equipment operating status, PSA Marine translates data into knowledge and action. Starting from Scope 1 emissions, we are doing our part in creating a sustainable future for generations to come.

PSA Marine’s ONEHANDSHAKE™ is an innovative digital platform built to connect all mariners in one. Comprising of different modules which includes pilot event updates, liquid bulk application, bunkering, and vessel pilot communications, ONEHANDSHAKE™ is designed to share information on all Singapore port activities with a network of maritime stakeholders, for better connectivity and communication.

In 2022, PSA Marine engaged a third-party certification body, TÜV SÜD PSB to perform a verification of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) statement reported by the company, in accordance to ISO 14064-1:2018. The verification of PSA Marine’s GHG statement includes the assessment of the company’s GHG information system, monitoring and reporting plan/protocol. A risk-based approach was adopted, drawing on an understanding of the risks associated with reporting GHG emissions information and the controls in place to mitigate. TÜV SÜD PSB concluded that PSA Marine’s GHG statement is conforming to the requirements of ISO 14064-1:2018.

The PSA Go Green event takes place annually where all business units around the world participate in various green initiatives, doing their part for the environment. At PSA Marine, various sustainability-themed workshops and activities are held to encourage our employees to embrace green mindsets and take green actions. Go Green initiative is PSA’s effort to promote environmental awareness while highlighting our collective and individual efforts for the environment.

Every year, PSA Marine joins the world as individuals, communities and businesses come together to switch off in the symbolic one-hour lights-out movement. Our Singapore headquarter, along with overseas business units in Peru and Bangladesh participated by turning off all lights at offices, bases and workshops, pledging our support in this world’s largest movement for the environment.

In PSA Marine Singapore West Coast Base, an e-waste collection drive was organised for employees to deposit their e-waste for recycling. This is part of the organisation’s Go Green effort to inspire our employees to adopt a sustainable lifestyle and be mindful of their consumption pattern and waste production. A total of 107kg of electronic waste was collected and sent to designated facilities for resources recycling and proper disposal.

As part of PSA Marine’s continuous effort to reduce unnecessary resource consumption, installation of motion-sensor lightings is one of the projects that the company has undertaken since 2020. Places such as lobby area, lift corridors, toilets, staircases and basement carparks have since been installed with LED lightings that are able to detect motion and switch on only when in need. This initiative has enabled us to save electricity costs through the reduction in energy consumption, leading to lesser fossil fuels usage and CO2 emission.

Both PSA Wanda and PSA Vision joined the PSA Marine Singapore fleet on 7 Mar 2022, adding strength to our “superhero” series of named harbour tugs.

Both tugs carry the red-white-grey colour scheme, not only as a signature to differentiate our Singapore towage fleet from other operators, but also a means of simplifying upkeep and optimising paint usage across the fleet!

The standardisation of paint scheme is a simple but practical way to demonstrate our commitment towards sustainable business practices. It lowers paint consumption, minimise wastages, and as a result, decreases operating costs and doing good for our planet.
